Full event details

Attendees will participate in two out of three of the below workshops to get hands-on experience, gain an understanding of the course content and what it's like to actually study these subjects at University-level.

Information regarding these sessions is below.

Chemistry

The synthesis of complex drug molecules fundamentally relies on transforming organic functional groups, combining basic starting materials to create intricate, pharmaceutically active compounds. Modern drug design prioritizes the use of readily available materials, such as simple sugars like glucose. We'll explore historical and contemporary drugs derived from glucose, along with how they're synthesised. Following this, we'll proceed to our lab facilities to initiate the first stage of a multi-step synthesis for various glucose-based drugs. You'll have hands-on experience in our labs, synthesizing and isolating a vital glucose derivative, followed by analysing your reaction using infrared spectroscopy.

Pharmacology

How do snake venom toxins affect the body under different conditions? This session will explore pharmacological research that seeks to understand the effects of snake venoms and look to improve treatment methods for snakebites.

Pharmacology is the branch of biomedical science concerned with the study of drugs and their effects on living organisms. It encompasses the research, discovery, characterization, and evaluation of drugs, including their mechanisms of action, therapeutic uses, side effects, and interactions with biological systems. Pharmacologists aim to understand how drugs interact with the body at the molecular, cellular, and systemic levels, with the ultimate goal of developing safe and effective medications for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases.

Food & Nutritional Sciences

Come and experience the wonderful world of food science where chemistry and sensory science collide. In this interactive practical session, you will create you very own synthetic sparkling apple juice. You will use both taste and smell to produce a fizzy drink that has a great all-round flavour. We will explain to you what sorts of ingredients go into a soft drink, which ones are sweet and which ones are sour,  and you will decide how much you want to put in to make that perfect beverage. This will be a fun, hands-on session, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions and hear more about food and nutritional sciences.
