This talk explores how race and migration shaped Britain's domestic politics and war effort in the period 1900 - 1950, and investigates whether hostility towards immigrants in the 1960s was a new phenomenon after the Second World War or the outcome of continuous disquiet and unrest from 1900 onward. We advocate for a historical reading that the experience of non-white Britons and immigrant communities were integral to any overarching narrative of British history in the period 1900 - 1950.
