Monday 14 November, 10-11am

1641-1660 was arguably the most turbulent period in all English history. The period was marked by rebellion in Ireland; bloody Civil Wars in Britain; political, religious and social radicalism; regicide; eleven years of republican rule; and the de facto restoration of the monarchy.

Historians are still deeply divided on these events’ causes, the manner in which they occurred and their significance. Whereas class and ideological conflict once seemed a plausible explanatory tool, the so-called revisionist interpretation of early modern England has shifted the emphasis away from tension towards consensus and contingency.

Dr Ariel Hessayon introduces you to the latest research and debates among historians and focuses on a crucial phenomenon that current work has marginalised: popular protest and radicalism during the English Revolution.

You can book onto this event as an individual (and access it from home or school/college) or you can make a group booking.
