This event is designed to provide prospective Law students with moot debating skills and techniques.

The first part of the day will feature academic taster sessions which will prepare students on how to debate by experts in the field. They will also receive a taster seminar on the area of Law which the moot debate shall be covering. Students will be able to go on a campus tour of the University, and ask current students any questions they have about academic study and student life.

This event is perfect for Year 13s who have applied to study Law at St Mary's, as well as Year 12s who are considering studying law at university and wish to gain experience to include on their UCAS applications.

Timetable:

Schedule
10am: Welcome to St Mary’s and Careers in Law
10.15am: Activity on interpreting a criminal statute: The Theft Act 1968
11am: Discuss one of three propositions (see below)
11.45am: Campus tour
12.30pm: Lunch
1:15pm: Moot debate
2.30pm: Depart

Propositions for discussion
You will be asked to provide a ‘for’ or an ‘against’ argument for one of:

- It is okay to download songs from the internet without paying, even if this is against the law.
- Children should not be allowed to eat fatty and sugary foods.
- There should be no rules against bullying in schools, as children need to learn to stand up for themselves
