Wednesday 20th October 15:00 Virus Heroes and Villains

University of Salford's Chloe James explores how we are currently living through the biggest pandemic of the century so far. The SARS-CoV-2 virus has infected over 200 million people across the globe since Dec 2018 and Covid-19 has killed over 4.7 million. Very few lives have been untouched by viral disease or the societal impacts caused by viral disease. But other viruses are having a hugely positive influence on our lives. There has been great progress in vaccine development using virus carriers. Other viruses (phages) that infect bacteria are being used as therapy to treat infections caused by multi-drug resistant bacteria in the fight against the silent pandemic of antimicrobial resistance.
The need for expert knowledge of microbiology has never been more prominent in the public eye.
This taster lecture introduces you to the basic composition of viruses, some well-known virus villains, like SARS-coV-2, HIV and Ebola as well as some lesser-known virus heroes that are part of our everyday life.
