Join us for a friendly taster lecture to find out what it's like to study geography at university.
Session time: Wednesday 1 December, 14.15-15.15
In this insight4me geography webinar for schools and colleges, two universities, University of East Anglia (UEA) and University of Nottingham, will each have roughly 30 minutes to deliver a punchy, topic based ‘micro’ talk. Within an overall session theme of landscapes and systems, the universities have the freedom to choose their own focus and use the time to convey the key points of the case studies for the students.
UEA talk details:
'Is natural flood management at the landscape scale a good option?'
Flood risk management in the UK centres on built flood protection, such as weirs and flood walls as well as flood insurance. With climate change impacts more homes, businesses, farms, and critical infrastructure (roads, rail, water treatment, etc) will be at risk of flooding and the costs of flood protection and flood relief will only grow. A new, hybrid approach is to integrate natural flood management at the landscape scale to reduce flood damage. In this lecture, we will discuss the effectiveness of this shift in flood risk management and the barriers and opportunities to its wider implementation.
Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom, or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home.
