Come along to our Live Philosophy, Religion and Ethics Taster Webinar taking place on 11 May 2021. The webinar will be hosted by Higher Education Advisor Mandi Kaur and Senior Lecturer Dr Jenny Bunker. In this session, we will investigate how we decide whether or not something is a work of art. We'll start by trying to categorise some examples - is a pre-historic cave painting a work of art? What about a firework display or a really good meal? We'll have a go at coming up with a definition of art that includes all the things we think are art and excludes everything else, thinking about what features they have in common - for example, does something need to be beautiful to be a work of art? Does it need to have been created by a human being? Finally, we'll consider the question of whether it is possible to define art at all, and why it matters! What you will need: a sheet of paper, a pen or pencil, a little bit of critical thinking.
