Session time: 16.15-17.15

In this session, UEA and University of Reading will begin by exploring the fascinating academic content of their degree programmes in the form of a mini lecture based on one of their undergraduate modules. Each university will then offer an insight into the teaching and learning experience related to these modules and to their Education degrees more generally.

UEA's talk will be "Exploring digital education – where we are, where we’ve been, and where we’re going."

In this session, Dr Harry T. Dyer will unpack the history, present, and future of digital education. Drawing on a range of topics such as digital citizenship and digital literacy, we will discuss how education is currently making use of technology, and what is missing in the current UK curriculum. We will look at the disconnects between young people’s experiences online and the topics of discussion in classrooms to unpack if there is more we could do to make education better reflect the needs, experiences, and habits of young people in a meaningful way. We will also explore the ways in which technology treats users in an unequal way, and what this means for technology in the classroom, especially after a national pandemic where digital technology was a default means of education. Finally, we will explore new developments in technology, and what this might mean for classrooms of the future. Harry will make time to discuss the BA in general and the sorts of teaching UEA does, weaving in discussions of what to expect from an Education degree.

Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures.

Suitable for: Year 12 & 13 students and equivalent studying, or with a possible interest in studying, Education and related disciplines.

The IT Setup: The event will be run on Bluejeans and participants will be able to join using laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. You will be able to interact with the university via a microphone and/or typed comments and questions. Full details will be sent to those who have registered prior to the event.
