The guest speakers for this event are Leon Harris, a Regional Education Liaison Officer (East and West Midlands) at the University of Hertfordshire and Andrew Cooper, the Schools and Colleges Account Manager at Liverpool John Moores University.
Making university decisions during Christmas and last minute tips
There are 50,000+ undergraduate courses available from 320+ institutions in the UK and no two courses are the same, so it is vital that you make the right choice, explains Leon.
When looking at university courses there are many factors you need to take into consideration and this is explored in this session. Leon advises students to visit university websites and to read over prospectuses before making their decision. He also shares useful websites you can visit to receive informed, objective information about your chosen university.
He goes on to talk about why you should look in detail at the course content, as courses with similar sounding names may actually be very different. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic it is will be difficult to visit your chosen university. Leon looks at how you can work around this by accessing virtual tours and online open days to explore the facilities on offer at a university. As well as this, webinars and online presentations will give you the opportunity to learn more about different subjects and universities. Finally, Leon speaks about the UCAS deadline for applications and shares some key tips at the end.
How to make those final decisions
Andrew explains why your personal statement is one of the most important aspects of your university application, and shares a method which ensures you are analytical and not descriptive.
On UCAS you can apply for five courses, so it is important to research thoroughly before deciding on which ones to choose. Andrew shares a useful website to hep you choose the right UCAS course if you are uncertain and looks at how you can use online tools to improve your personal statement.
He goes on to look at the range of factors you should consider before deciding such as course content, university facilities, entry requirements and accommodation. Finally, he talks about what to do before submitting your application.
