In a world in which it is estimated that some billion people speak English, the English language session will focus on the threat and the promise of English today. It will look at how we got here, where we are going, and what has happened to the language along the way. The English literature session will focus on developing an understanding of gaze theory (specifically the Panopticon) and its history and practical applications around the world. More importantly, we will examine the role of the gaze in texts, how to use it to close read film, and how ideas of the Panopticon frequently overlap with literary and cinematic form.

Attending this event is a great way to really feel what it’s like to thrive as a University student at Aston, meeting students, staff and virtually seeing our city-centre campus.
