As well as being home to academically acclaimed researchers, and hosting the Centre for Film and Ethics, the Department remains at the forefront of the field with its state-of-the-art facilities and visits from the most exciting filmmakers and thinkers of the day.
At undergraduate level we offer a range of distinctive and career-oriented degree pathways. This Taster Session will present an overview of who we are and what we do, mentioning some of our exciting and pioneering work in film theory and practice. You will be able to gain an insight into the multifaceted world of film analysis from the standpoint of film culture, philosophy and global cinemas alongside film practice perspectives. The taster sessions are designed to illustrate the multifarious opportunities afforded by our various programmes to engage with diverse dimensions of film. Department staff will be happy to provide information and respond to questions following the taster sessions. There will be an opportunity to meet some of our students, who will be able to answer queries about the student experience at QM.
5.00 - 5.15pm: Lucy Bolton: Welcome to Film at Queen Mary - Specialisms and Activities
In this presentation, Dr Lucy Bolton will introduce the film department at QMUL and explain the type of work we all do here in terms of teaching, research, events and activities.
5.15 - 5.30pm: Ash Devasundaram: Film Analysis Taster Session: Film as a Window to the World
This concise taster lecture led by Dr Ash Devasundaram will present a foundational ‘bare bones’ guide to performing a robust film analysis. The scholarly appraisal of cinematic texts can assist in revealing and exploring multiple dimensions of society, culture, politics, history and other arenas. This session will demonstrate how penetrating analyses of films can help encourage a global worldview that is inclusive of race, gender, sexuality and identity – all very important themes in our contemporary time.
5.30pm - 5.45pm: Athena Mandis: Film Practice Taster Session
This taster lecture led by Athena Mandis will present a foundational guide to how we look at practice at QMUL. We will also see a short film from the first years. We will look at how what makes a good film is not necessarily the technology but the ideas that we have and our desire to express them. We will look at how we go from script to delivery across the three years at QMUL
5:45pm - 6.00pm: Q&A session: Q&A with Current Students
This 15-minute slot is your chance to ask our current students about the programme, the modules they’ve taken, living in London, etc.
6.00pm - 6.30pm: Q&A session with Film Studies staff
This segment will present the opportunity to pose any specific queries regarding the programme, entry requirements, personal statement, etc.
