Today, we are accustomed to think of the international order made up of nation states, as the units of reference that interact with each other in setting domestic and global political agendas.

However, nation-states are neither the sole nor the longest lasting form of political organisation in history. In other words, states are nothing but a very recent invention and, for centuries, empires have dominated the international landscape and determined the distribution of power in the international arena.

This taster lecture takes you on a journey that explores the development of imperial powers since modernity, the rise and decline of European economic and political influence and how this legacy has shaped the emergent modern state in the 20th century international society.

The lecture invites you to reflect on how, far from being a pure historical concern, the study of empire is vital for an understanding of the world as we know it today.

This taster will also include an introductory overview of studying at NCH, and there will be ample time for Q&A with Faculty and Student Ambassadors
