In a stadium of thousands, with millions watching at home, it can be the loneliest place in the world and with nowhere to hide. Carrying the hopes and dreams of your supporters, club or nation and doing something you've trained your entire professional life for, it boils down to just you versus the goalkeeper, one strike of the ball - hit or miss.
The penalty shoot-out is the stuff of nightmares or dreams.
In this session, Dr Denise Hill of Swansea University's School of Sport & Exercise Sciences will explore the psychology of football penalty shoot-outs and discuss why some footballers end up choking under the pressure, and missing.
