Our academic from the English Department, Professor Jane Setter, will be giving you a flavour of what it is like to study English Language and Linguistics at the University of Reading.
Topics covered will include:
• What is accent prejudice, and why does it exist in the UK?
• What can people learn about you from the way you speak?
• Why do we have so many accents in the UK, and what are some of the factors that cause accents to change?
Jane is probably best known as the author of popular science book "Your Voice Speaks Volumes: It's not what you say, but how you say it" (OUP, 2019) and co-editor of the eighteenth edition of the "Cambridge English Pronouncing Dictionary" (CUP, 2011). Her main research interests are English phonetics and phonology, English pronunciation and intelligibility (including in World and learner Englishes), phonology in atypical speech populations (specifically Williams syndrome), and phonetics and phonology in Hong Kong English; her particular interest is in prosodic aspects of speech such as rhythm and intonation. She has is a popular speaker on the subject of English speech and pronunciation, and has appeared in print, broadcast and online media, including
