In this talk, I’ll outline some of the key features of poetry as a literary genre. I’ll then suggest some ways that you can improve your close reading skills by taking a language-focused approach to analysis (also known as stylistics). I’ll demonstrate, through reference to some First World War poetry, how stylistics can help to explain interpretations and help you clearly and convincingly explain your ideas on poetry.
