This talk looks at what studying languages at University involves (either on their own or in conjunction with another subject such as International Business, International Relations, Sociology or English) and the doors it can open. The talk explains the Aston approach of teaching languages with an applied and professional focus, equipping students with fundamental skills in intercultural understanding. Through concrete examples, it shows how Aston offers a broad-based study of the societies in which students’ chosen language(s) are spoken, spanning cultural, political, business and economic aspects. Languages can be studied at Aston University either post A-level or from Beginners (Ab initio).
