Chemistry at Kent

Chemistry at Kent is distinctive; our degrees are designed to equip students with a solid foundation of organic, inorganic and physical chemistry through a range of modules including drug chemistry, computing skills and fires and explosions. The course demonstrates how chemistry is applied to the key challenges of the 21st century such as human health, the world’s increasing energy demands and tackling and climate issues. Our chemistry degrees – including our courses with a year in industry and a year abroad - are now open to those who haven’t previously studied science at a higher level (Key stage 5) through our foundation year.

What’s it all about?

This course is designed to give you hands-on experience in organic synthesis, coordination chemistry and several analytical techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) infrared (IR) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy. It is focused on current cutting edge research carried out within our School of Physical Sciences. This course will; allow you to develop laboratory and analytical skills, team work, give an insight into the world of academic research and university life as well as the many options in academia and industry available to you after completing a Chemistry degree.

What will I be doing?

A truly immersive experience, this course will introduce you to what studying chemistry is like within the School of Physical Sciences at the University of Kent. You will experience lectures from current research active members of staff on their research and the degree programmes along with an overview of the possible career options for you, including information on our year in industry programme. You will also experience hands on individual and small group work in a laboratory environment, analytical techniques and problem solving activities.

Would this course suit me?

This course is suitable for anyone with a passion for chemistry. If you are interested in organic/inorganic chemistry, physical/analytical chemistry, medicinal/pharmaceutical chemistry or forensic chemistry and would like an introduction to a Chemistry degree at the University of Kent, this course is for you.

There is a fee to attend this course, but some bursaries are available.

Applications need to be made by students.
