ENGINEERING WITHOUT BORDERS

In the contemporary world disasters and poor development practices have left billions of people without access to basic services such as clean water, sanitation, shelter, energy and transport. This situation has occurred across the globe, from those who are impacted by natural disaster to those in conflict situations.

Headstart at Coventry University will give you an insight to how you, as an engineer, can work to improve quality of life for those living in cities. You will learn about appropriate engineering solutions in complex environments – that include not only the maths and technology, but also ethics, social justice, cultural appropriateness and affordability.

What's it all about?

This four-day residential course will allow you to experience a range of engineering disciplines that are taught in Coventry University. Practical exercises and projects will test problem solving and team-working skills, whilst the accompanying topical lectures will introduce the theory and issues engineers face in this field. Field visits will allow you to experience first-hand the challenges of providing basic needs in the UK.

All sessions will be delivered by leading academics and industrial experts to give you a chance to ask lots of questions about studying engineering, and also working as an engineer.

What will I be doing?

The Course will involve a mix of

• Hands on projects e.g. design, building real life and computer generated models
• Lectures from leading researchers and practitioners in this exciting area of study
• Field trips to view real-life applications of global engineering
• Overnight accommodation in the halls of residence and access to Coventry University student services
• A programme of evening social activities

All activities will be based in Coventry's Engineering and Computing Faculty building, one of the most cutting-edge sustainable buildings in the UK.

Would this course suit me?

This course will suit you if you have a general scientific or maths background and an interest in the global issues facing the world today. The UK needs 50,000 new engineers by 2034 to generate creative, innovative ideas and the appropriate technologies to tackle today’s global issues. If you are considering studying engineering at university, then this residential course will provide an introduction to the exciting and expanding topic of global engineering.

There is a fee to attend this course, but some bursaries are available.

Applications need to be made by students.
