Full event details

What is it all about?

The Aerospace Headstart event at Coventry University is organised around the multi-disciplinary theme of aerospace engineering. The Research Centre for Transportation and Mobility is currently working with industry and authorities on a variety of projects including aircraft safety of light aircraft with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and CFD Aerodynamics.

What will I be doing?

You will complete a wing build activity to test its aerodynamic and structural properties. You will work in teams solving specific aerospace engineering problems. This will involve building and flying an aircraft. You will compete against other members enrolled on the Headstart programme. To carrying out this task you will get to experience many of our facilities and meet with students and engineers.

Design and develop a wing model. The designed wing will be used for destructive testing.

Use our wind tunnel to investigate the aerodynamic effects in flight.

Fly the Flight Simulator to understand flight performance.

Use computing facilities to analyse data.

Orientation of Harrier fighter jet and its Vertical Take-Off Lift (VTOL).

Would this course suit me?

This is the course for you if you are interested in the following subjects and have a strong maths background:

Airframe structures and materials
Avionics and electronic systems
Aerodynamics and Fluid Dynamics
Design and manufacturing issues for aircraft
Aerospace and aeronautical engineering

What do I need to be suitable?

If you have a keen passion for the technical aspects of flight and flying, and cross disciplinary working in the field of engineering then this course will suit you. We will also attempt to ensure that you get a little taste of other areas of engineering such as basic mechanics, electrical and humanitarian engineering.

There is a fee to attend this course, but some bursaries are available.
