This masterclass examines the fierce competition between rival trading companies – the Portuguese. Dutch and English East India Companies between 17th and early 19th centuries. This corporate rivalry eventually resulted in the British gaining an imperial foothold in India. From these roots, the second British Empire was born. How did the East India Company rule and expand during this period?

This lecture analyses imperial rivalries and explores how the Company came to rule what would become the ‘jewel’ in the crown of Britain’s Empire.
