2.15pm-3pm Representing Love, Gender and Sexuality – Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night
This session will consider Renaissance attitudes towards love, gender and sexuality in relation to Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. We will explore how the play examines these categories, and how it also raises important questions about how we see ourselves and others.
3pm-3.15pm Break
3.15pm-4pm Love Through the Ages - Death and Immortality in Thomas Hardy's 'Emma Poems'
In this session we will carry out close readings of a series of poems Hardy wrote in 1912-1913 following the sudden death of his wife Emma. We will consider how poetry can offer a medium to communicate with a lost loved one, how the ‘Emma Poems’ fit into the elegiac tradition and whether or not they offer a resolution to the speaker's feelings of grief and remorse.
