2.15pm-3pm Sexism in the lexicon: Beard, Beyoncé and 'bossy'
In this session we will examine struggles in and about discourse with particular attention to attempts to eradicate sexism from the English language, including the discourse of 'political correctness'.
3pm-3.15pm Break
3.15pm-4pm Value of Multilingualism
We will discuss the linguistic situation in Britain focusing on the reasons for monolingualism among the English-speaking communities and the rapid loss of heritage languages among the ethnic minority population. We will highlight how multilingual competence is important in the modern world and share ideas how the UK can become more multiilngual in future.
