We are delighted to invite you and your Level 3 students to our Tolkien Symposium. Tolkien was part of the team which translated the Jerusalem Bible at Liverpool Hope. This free event will celebrate the university’s connection with Tolkien and explore his work through a variety of disciplines.

The schedule for the day is as follows:

11am-11.10am Welcome to Hope
11:10am-11.45am ‘‘Down the crooked fairy lane’: Tolkien’s ‘Goblin Feet’ and the Men who March Away’ Guy Cuthbertson (Literature, Liverpool Hope University)
11:45am-12:30pm ‘Tolkien’s Manuscripts: From Moria to Milwaukee’ Stuart Lee (Literature, University of Oxford)
12:30pm-1:30pm Lunch (Please note students are advised to bring a packed lunch or money to purchase lunch in our on campus catering facilities)
1.30pm-2.20pm ‘I am not specially interested in children, and certainly not in writing for them’ - J.R.R. Tolkien's views on children's literature’ Elizabeth Solopova (Linguistics, University of Oxford)
2.20pm-3.10pm ‘Diction and narrative in The Lord of the Rings’ Edmund Weiner, co-editor of the Oxford English Dictionary
3.10pm-4pm ‘The Great Wave: Tolkien’s Atlantis myth, the 1930s crisis of civilisation, and the bridge to The Lord of the Rings.’ John Garth (author of Tolkien and the Great War)
4pm-5pm ‘Tolkien and Faith’ Lord David Alton, former MP of Liverpool and Liverpool Hope Alumnus
5pm-6pm Alan Lee, Academy Award winning Concept Artist of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films

In addition to this event the Department of English are hosting a Tolkien inspired Art Contest. Finalists will be judged by Alan Lee, Academy Award winning Concept Artist of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films. The winner will receive a £50 cash prize and their artwork will be featured in the Tolkien Symposium event programme. This is a wonderful opportunity for young artists.

• The contest is open to anyone in full time education aged 16-19 years old.
• All submissions must be original pieces of artwork based upon or inspired by Tolkien's literature.
• Submissions cannot be copies (or tracings) of photographs, movie stills or other published illustrations.
• Submissions must be two dimensional works (paintings, drawings and graphic design images) based upon the books or films.
• The deadline for submissions is Friday 14th of October 2016. Submissions can be sent to Tolkien Art Contest, Department of English, Liverpool Hope University, Liverpool, L16 9JD. Submissions can also be sent via email to [email protected]. Please take a good quality photograph of your artwork if submitting via email. Students need to include their full name, school, age and email address.
• Other submissions besides the winner may also be featured in the event programme as well.
