The media influences our perceptions of practically everything. From the moment we wake till the moment we go to sleep, we constantly engage with our smartphones, tablets and computers, as well as the traditional media. In this sense, the media doesn’t just surround us…it inhabits us! In this masterclass, Ellis Cashmore will explain how the media has changed us by focusing on the case study of James Turner Street (As seen on Channel 4 Benefits Street). Students will discuss the notion that our relationships with the media often affect our understanding of certain social groups and problems in society; paying particular attention to our notion of crime and deviance.
