With this in mind, the University of Birmingham is organising an event that concentrates on getting students who will be sitting their GCSEs in 2017 to start thinking about the importance that the next nine months will play in determining their future aspirations.

The Achieve Conference will focus on getting students to learn about the importance of their GCSE qualifications, what Russell Group universities look for and what sixth forms and colleges expect from pre-16 students. The messages from the day are deliberately designed to make students aware that Year 11 is a time that they need to focus their efforts and minds in order to achieve their target grades, if not to exceed them. We are encouraging schools to target those students that have the academic potential to aim for a Russell Group university and those that have the academic ability but lack the motivation.
