‘What a Tangled Web We Weave, When We First Practise to Deceive.’

Children’s Social and Cognitive Development and Theory of Mind

Children learn to deceive others early in their development. They do this for a number of reasons. The session is not about the ethics or morality of lying, but of the psychological study of children’s ‘normal’ development and how children come to understand our complex social world. Understanding what others know or do not know is an aspect of Theory of Mind (TOM), an important feature of children’s social and cognitive development.
