Birmingham Popular Maths Lectures - Transfroms: Dark of Matter

Materials science is a discipline that links the properties of all materials to their inner structure at various length-scales. Thanks to this, we have made several advances in technology that today allow us to have 800m-tall skyscrapers, 640tons-heavy planes, and a whole lot of computational power in our pockets.

To break through the next frontiers of technology, however, we need to be able to explore the inner structure of materials with details at a level never imaginable before! The times when we could use a simple optical microscope are long gone, and materials scientist around the world now use far more advanced techniques to probe deeper and in more details inside the wonderful world of materials.

The problem with these new shiny (and expensive!) techniques and tools is that they often deliver more data that we can possibly deal with. Mathematics, in the form of transforms, comes to our rescue to help us translate and analyse these massive amounts of data and shed some light on the many dark areas of how materials work.

The Birmingham Popular Mathematics Lectures are open to all members of the public and the University who are interested in the study of Mathematics. They are particularly suitable for those studying Mathematics at A Level and we also welcome advanced GCSE students. Young people are welcome on their own, with parents or with a school group.

The lectures are free of charge and in general there is no need to register. The lectures start at 7.30pm and last one hour, please arrive in the Watson building from 7pm onwards.
