The Risky Business of Pregnancy (Thursday 22nd October 6.30pm)

Pregnancy should be a joyous time, yet it still takes the lives of mothers and babies. In the BBC period drama ‘Downton Abbey’, the death of Lady Sybil to childbirth highlighted this tragedy, but are we any closer today to finding a cure for pre-eclampsia– a high blood pressure disorder affecting 1 in 20 pregnancies? In this lecture, Professor Asif Ahmed, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Health at Aston University, will explore the discoveries made by Aston and Birmingham University which could ‘put the brakes on pre-eclampsia’ and benefit the whole of society.
