The modern world has been profoundly shaped by political scientists, philosophers and economists. The concepts of democracy, the market and even human rights all stem from the same western tradition, which has tended to emphasise individual rationality and choice.

In this masterclass, we look at two topics within the broad field of PPE: finance and elites.
We will consider how finance is a diverse cultural network rather than a purely mathematical process, and how finance (amongst other things) helps to channel political power. Can democracy offer a more balanced politics? And why (and indeed how) have elites managed to create so many problems? How else, in short, could we organise society?
