Programme of Higher Education Related CPD

During the summer term we will be offering a series of free workshops and seminars for staff that provide higher education-related advice in schools and colleges. The seminars will cover a range of topics to help you in your role, whether experienced or new to this type of work.

With the rise in student fees and changes to higher education affecting the decisions students make we have designed a programme of events to support your delivery of informed impartial advice and guidance.

Wednesday May 6th Asking Powerful Questions 1.30pm to 3.00pm

Jane Owens will deliver this workshop and provide you with an opportunity to:
• Reflect on your current questioning skills
• Consider questions that encourage people to specify their goals, consider their current situation, identify their options and plan for action
• Practise new questions to aid your clients’ thinking and decision making.

Wednesday May 13th Making the transition to higher education – what will help your students? 1.30pm to 3.00pm

We bring together a group of current students and recent graduates for a round table discussion about their experiences of transition to higher education. Questions and contributions will be encouraged. There will also be opportunities to tour the campus before or after this session.

Wednesday May 20th University Interviews 1.30pm to 3.00pm

Interviews are being used more and more for high demand courses and as a recruitment tool. Help your students to prepare for the different types of interviews.

Wednesday June 3rd Student Finance for 2016 entry including support for mature students 1.30pm to 3.00pm

Katy Barge from Student Finance England will go through the student finance package for 2016 / 17 including the additional support which can be applied for such as Dependants’ Grants and Disabled Students’ Allowances followed by a look at the Student Finance England Practitioner Resources available for use with students.

Wednesday June 10th What to do if things go wrong – other options and back-up plans 1.30pm to 3.00pm

How to support students who don’t receive offers, are unsuccessful with their applications, change their minds or make late applications.

Wednesday June 17th What makes a difference in the changing landscape? 1.30pm to 3.00pm

Post-election, change to qualifications, UCAS tariff, the new statutory guidance for careers guidance and inspiration in schools, the requirements for collaborative working by HEIs and Pupil Premium accountability. How we approach these shifts in policy will impact on the students we work with – this session will focus on exploring practical ways to maximise the benefit for your students.

Wednesday June 24th Coaching Tools and Techniques 1.30pm to 3.00pm

Jane Owens will deliver a second workshop where you will:
• Reflect on your current practice
• Consider a range of coaching tools and techniques, including motivational interviewing and other creative approaches
• Practise new approaches to aid your clients’ thinking and decision making

Wednesday July 1st Getting into Nursing – values based recruitment 1.30pm to 3.00pm

Helen Jones, Senior Lecturer and Admissions Tutor for Nursing will talk about Values Based Recruitment to the NHS, what it is like studying nursing and how to help your students get onto these competitive courses. Are their choices realistic? How are applicants selected? What are admissions tutors looking for?

Wednesday July 15th Using Performance Arts for Group Guidance 1:30pm to 3.00pm

Who should attend?
These seminars are suitable for teachers, tutors and advice staff in schools and colleges and other practitioners who provide higher education advice to prospective HE students. They may also appeal to Governors with responsibility for careers guidance and destinations of pupils. The seminars will cover a range of topics to help you in your role, whether experienced or new to this type of work.
