Institution Profile:

The University of Essex is home to the curious, brave and bold. We’re a university where curiosity prevails, and where exploring new ways of thinking and pushing boundaries, isn’t just encouraged, it’s expected. We're a university going places with increasing numbers of students and one of the most international academic communities in the world.

We were named University of the Year at the Times Higher Education Awards 2018 for our determination to do things differently and put student success at the centre of everything we do.

We’re proud to be gold rated in the Teaching Excellence Framework 2017 and we're in the top 25 for research quality in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide. We are also in the top 15 for the seventh year running in the National Student Survey for overall student satisfaction (2019, overall student satisfaction, English mainstream universities*).

We're committed to two things: excellence in teaching and excellence in research. We put student success at the heart of our mission, supporting every student from every background to achieve outstanding outcomes; preparing our students to thrive in their future lives. We give our students genuine licence to take intellectual risks so that as well as learning how, they challenge why.

Our students are members of our university – for life. From their first contact with us, to beyond their graduation, students are active members of our mutually supportive community where they build friendships, develop interests and embrace values which transform their lives and careers and those of others. We offer an environment that reflects and supports our founding philosophy: an intimate yet genuinely international setting that fuses ideas, cultures and a breadth of perspectives, where internationalism is central to who we are and what we do.

At Essex, our students discover the world in one place; they develop a cultural sensitivity along with a genuine world view that prepares them for life as global citizens. We believe that curiosity can be as profound in creating change as experience, so at Essex, our students partner with academics, informing and actively participating in research. We equip our students with the skills to research, stimulate their curiosity to question conventional wisdom and nurture their desire to pursue new ideas; enduring life skills which prepare our students for personal and professional success.

If you give up at the first hurdle, Essex isn’t for you. If you are brave enough to have ideas and generous enough to share them, Welcome home.
