Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment

The morning element of the Taster Days will consist of fun, interactive and engaging life skills sessions which are not subject-specific and aim to equip students with the skills needed to make a successful transition into the world of higher education. Students will rotate between a number of workshops, including a session with a stand-up comedian, a session exploring the often complex world of student finance and an engaging music quiz to help decipher which is the right course for them.

After the life skills sessions, students will then go to their chosen workshop:

Built Environment: Building your future
This session introduces students to careers in the built environment industries, from designing buildings and choosing materials to costing and managing the materials and people needed to make those buildings happen in a sustainable and profitable way, to inspecting, valuing and trading in property. Students will get involved in discussion and practical taster activities specifically focusing on old and new buildings, design, construction, conservation and business.

Computing/ ICT: Using computing and ICT in today’s digital world
Individuals and organisations continue to use and rely on ever more complex computer systems, networks and software platforms, which are programmed by technologists and maintained by electronic engineers. Students will find out about the exciting and modern computing-related courses we offer, the close links we have with both small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and multinational companies, and perhaps most importantly, how our courses give students the skills, attributes and experiences to be extremely employable in an ever-evolving digital world.

Digital Technology/Media: Creativity, technology and employability
Our BSc courses develop students’ technical skills, allowing them to maximise their potential across of a range of technology in the fast-evolving media environment. This session will give students an insight into the range of courses that we offer and the opportunity to find out more about visual computing, music and sound technologies, film production, digital signal processing and broadcast.

Engineering: Engineering in the 21st Century
This session will highlight the modern advances in engineering in the second decade of the 21st Century. Engineering is a professional discipline which is recognised and respected across the globe just like medicine, law and accountancy. We will highlight the importance of engineering and how it helps to sustain and grow the local, national and the global economy. The session will demonstrate the integration of all aspects of engineering from conceptual design, prototyping and manufacturing through to volume production. Products will include how artificial limbs are manufactured and how the Formula Student race car is designed and manufactured from scratch in less than six months.
